PDFtuning Manual/Wiki
PDFtuning is a professional PDF optimization tool designed for electronic reading and mobile device displays. Using smart algorithms trained on a vast library of reading samples, it transforms complex academic papers, technical documents, and books into an ideal state for various screen sizes and resolutions.
1. Why Choose PDFtuning?
Traditional PDF editors often have cumbersome settings, and online services pose privacy risks while lacking specialized support for small-screen reading. PDFtuning offers a brand-new experience:
Multi-Device Global Preview: Built-in 30+ popular device models (such as Kindle, Kobo, iPad, Boox, etc.), allowing you to see the real-time layout before and after optimization.
Local Processing, Privacy First: All workflows (analysis, conversion, compression) are completed locally on your machine. We don't use cloud-based AI; instead, we use smart models trained on extensive samples to ensure 100% privacy and security.
One-Click Simplicity: Most optimizations—including smart cropping and TOC extraction—can be completed with a single click, no expert knowledge required.
Comprehensive Optimization: Features Smart Crop, TOC Outline generation, Reflow layout, and Image Processing to ensure maximum clarity on any reading device.
2. Interface Overview
2.1 Preview & Device Panel (Left)
Preview device list: Select your target device model. The app simulates the layout based on that device's resolution and aspect ratio. Whether it's a 6-inch reader or a 10+ inch tablet, you get a precise preview.
Hide device frame: Check this to focus solely on the page content without the surrounding device bezel.
Floating Toolbar:
Navigation: Jump to First/Last or Previous/Next pages.
TOC (Outline): Quickly view and navigate through the PDF's Table of Contents.
Landscape preview: Toggle horizontal view, ideal for wide PPTs or tables.
Hold to preview expanded crop (Eye Icon): Hold or click to instantly compare the view before and after cropping.
Visual Border Adjustment: Directly drag the edges in the preview area to fine-tune the crop area in real-time.
2.2 File Management (Center)
Modern Card Grid: View all pending files as interactive cards for easy management of multiple tasks.
Drag & Drop Support: Simply drag one or more PDF files into the window to add them.
Status Indicators: Each card displays "Original" and "Result" tags with live thumbnails.
Quick Actions: After tuning, click "Reveal in Finder" to locate the file, or use "Send to…" to share it with other apps or workflows.
2.3 Tuning Panel (Right)
Smart Crop: Auto-identifies content boundaries, removes redundant white margins, and intelligently preserves headers/footers.
TOC Outline: Uses structure-recognition algorithms (trained on large samples) to create a clickable Table of Contents for documents that lack one (e.g., PPTs, papers, study materials).
Reflow: Converts complex multi-column or wide layouts into a single-column flowing text layout—no more side-to-side scrolling on small screens.
Image Processing: Offers contrast enhancement, background noise removal, and watermark cleaning to ensure crisp, sharp text.
File Compression: Optimizes image DPI, replaces redundant fonts, and cleans hidden objects to significantly reduce file size.
3. Core Workflow
Step 1: Add Files
Drag and drop your PDF files into the center area of the app.
Step 2: Choose Target Screen
Select your device model from the top-left list. If your specific model isn't listed, choose one with a similar screen size to preview the layout.
Step 3: Configure Options
Choose the modules based on your document type:
Academic/Professional Papers: Recommended to enable Smart Crop + TOC Outline.
Small Screen Reading: For tiny fonts or multi-column layouts, enable Reflow.
Clarity Enhancement: If the background is gray or has distracting watermarks, adjust settings in the Image Processing module.
Step 4: Start Tuning
Click the "Start Tuning" button in the bottom-right corner. The "Result" preview will appear on the file card once completed.
4. Key Highlights: Real-time & Visual
4.1 Live Feedback
PDFtuning provides true "Adjust and See" interaction. When you adjust contrast, watermark removal strength, or manual margins on the right, the preview on the left updates instantly, helping you find the perfect settings in seconds.
4.2 Expanded Crop Preview
Click the "Eye" icon in the floating toolbar. Holding it will "fill" the device screen with the cropped content (simulating the reading experience); releasing it returns to the full-page view. This is crucial for verifying if text size is comfortable.
5. FAQ
Q1: What makes PDFtuning different from other PDF tools?
It's all about "Optimization for Reading & Cross-device Adaptation":
Extreme Simplicity: No manual coordinate math; smart algorithms trained on samples do the heavy lifting for a "one-click" experience.
Visual Adaptation: Our industry-first device simulation lets you see exactly how it looks before transferring files to your reader or tablet.
Reader-Friendly: Every feature—from TOC generation to margins—is designed to improve your reading flow.
Q2: Is the process secure?
Absolutely privacy-friendly. There are no cloud uploads. All smart optimization algorithms run entirely offline using local models. Unlike online services, your private documents never leave your computer.
Q3: Why is "Reflow" not available for some files?
Reflow requires identifying underlying character encoding. For scanned/image-based PDFs, we recommend using the "Smart Crop + Image Processing" mode: removing margins and boosting contrast often provides a superior reading experience for images.
Q4: Why did my file size increase after tuning?
This primarily happens during "Rasterization" operations.
If you enable "Grayscale conversion" or heavy "Image Processing," the app may convert pages to high-quality images to ensure clarity, which can increase size.
Smart Crop, TOC Outline, and File Compression modules typically reduce file size. You can balance quality and size by adjusting the target DPI in the "File Compression" module.
Q5: What is the difference between Free and Pro?
PDFtuning’s core optimization features are completely free, with no time limits or feature restrictions.
Pro Version: Provides a cleaner, more Premium experience (e.g., streamlined completion notifications).
Continuous Support: A one-time Pro purchase supports the developer in maintaining and refining the core optimization algorithms for life.
6. Pro Tips
Organizing Libraries: Use "TOC Outline" to batch-generate navigation structures for many PDFs that lack bookmarks.
Unified Paging: In "Smart Crop," use the "Unify crop area" option to prevent the page from "jumping" side-to-side when turning, making the experience more consistent.
Wireless Workflow: Use "File Compression" to shrink files, then use the "Send to Kindle" option in the "Send to…" menu for a seamless wireless experience.
