This policy explains how KMate for macOS, Windows, iPhone and iPad, and the KMate website handle data.
1. Scope and core principle
KMate is local-first. Your Kindle highlights, notes, vocabulary, reading activity, dictionaries, and settings are stored on your device by default.
KMate does not require a KMate account and does not operate a server that receives your library. Optional features described below may involve Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, online lookup providers, or book-catalog services.
2. Local data and platform differences
On macOS and Windows, imports, organization, dictionary management, reading, and exports are processed locally unless you initiate an optional online feature. KMate reads Kindle, database, and dictionary files only after you select or authorize them; Apple Books imports on macOS are also processed locally after the required folder access is granted.
On iPhone and iPad, KMate Mobile stores imported notes, vocabulary, reading status, settings, and custom dictionaries in its local app storage. Imported dictionary files and their resources are indexed and queried on the device.
KMate relies on platform protections such as the macOS App Sandbox, iOS app container, security-scoped file access, and Windows file permissions. No storage or transmission method can guarantee absolute security.
3. Optional iCloud sync
When you enable iCloud sync in KMate for Mac or KMate Mobile, the library records and sync state needed for the feature are stored in a private CloudKit database associated with your Apple ID so your devices can stay in sync. Apple processes this data under its own terms and privacy policy.
iCloud sync is optional. You can disable it or use the available in-app controls to remove cloud data. Cloud copies and backups may remain for a limited period according to Apple’s retention practices.
4. Optional Amazon import
When you choose Amazon import, KMate opens an Amazon-owned sign-in or Kindle Notebook page. You enter account credentials directly into Amazon’s page; KMate does not receive or store your Amazon password.
After you start an import, KMate reads the Kindle notebook data available in that authenticated session and saves the imported content locally, or to your private iCloud database if sync is enabled. Amazon may maintain session cookies and processes the session under its own privacy policy.
5. Optional external services
On desktop, an online translation, dictionary, or AI definition request sends the word, phrase, or context required for that request to the provider you choose, such as Google Translate, Bing Translate, Google Gemini, or DeepSeek. The provider also receives ordinary network metadata and applies its own terms.
KMate Mobile may send a book title to Open Library, Google Books, Douban, or Apple Books/iTunes to find cover artwork. These requests do not include your notes, highlights, or vocabulary; the provider receives the query and ordinary network metadata.
Local custom-dictionary lookup does not send dictionary contents or lookup terms to KMate. Dictionary files, indexes, images, fonts, and audio resources remain on the device unless you choose another service separately.
Purchases and subscriptions are processed by Apple or Microsoft. KMate receives product, transaction, and entitlement status needed to unlock features, but does not receive your full payment-card details.
6. Website analytics
The KMate website uses cookie-free Umami analytics to understand aggregate visits. It may process the visited page, referrer, browser or device information, and approximate location derived from the network request. Website analytics never receive your KMate library or in-app content.
7. Your choices, retention, and tracking
You can use KMate’s local features without enabling iCloud sync, Amazon import, online definitions, or cover lookup. Local data remains until you delete it, clear app data, or remove the app. External providers retain request data according to their own policies.
KMate does not sell or rent your library, use it for advertising, or perform cross-app tracking. App Store, Microsoft Store, iCloud, Amazon, and optional service providers may process their own account, transaction, diagnostic, or request data under their policies.
