Open Dict
FAQ
Answers about dictionaries, AI, purchases and your devices.
What can I use for free?
The free version supports up to 5 dictionaries, with no other feature restrictions or time limit. A one-time purchase removes the dictionary limit permanently. Open Dict has no subscription.
Do I need my own dictionaries? Where can I find them?
Yes. Import the dictionaries you want and build your own library. These are useful starting points: FreeMdict hosts MDX community discussions and resources; FreeDict, WikDict and Wiktionary Dictionaries offer free dictionaries built from open data. Download a supported format and import it into Open Dict.

- Wiktionary Dictionaries · GitHub ↗MOBI · StarDict · TSV
These resources are maintained by third-party communities or websites and may change at any time. Open Dict cannot ensure their availability.
Can I look up words offline?
Yes. Imported local dictionaries work offline. AI explanations connect to your chosen provider, and iCloud sync needs an internet connection.
How do AI models and costs work?
Use your own API key with DeepSeek, Kimi, GLM, Claude, Gemini or a custom API. Choose the model, language and prompt. API usage is billed by your provider separately from the app purchase.
What syncs between my devices?
Your personal iCloud account syncs lookup history, word groups, notes and AI configuration. Purchase sharing uses your Apple Account for the App Store; iCloud carries your learning data.
Why use my own API key for AI?
You choose the model and the prompt. Pick a capable model that suits you, know which model you are calling, and decide the language, depth and style of its answers. Go beyond definitions to collocations, synonym comparisons, sentence analysis or examples.
Pay for what you query. Use your provider’s API and pay for the input and output tokens you actually consume. Open Dict adds no AI usage fee and requires no AI subscription. For occasional lookups, this avoids a fixed monthly fee.
See your usage. AI dictionary details show the tokens consumed by calls, so you can estimate your costs from your provider’s rates.
Do I need to write my own AI dictionary prompts? Is it complicated?
No. Open Dict includes two ready-to-use templates: concise definitions and detailed learner entries. They adapt to your source and definition language settings. AI dictionaries go beyond a fixed list of entries, letting you explore words, phrases and sentences in the way you need.
To create your own style, start with one sentence:
Give a concise definition of {word} in {target_lang}.
Or create a multilingual learning dictionary:
Define {word} briefly in English, Chinese and Spanish, and provide two example sentences in each language.
Open Dict replaces {word} with your lookup text and {target_lang} with your chosen definition language. You do not need to rewrite the prompt for each lookup. Edit and test it whenever you like to find the explanation style that works for you.
Make Open Dict your own.
Start with a dictionary, add your preferred AI model, and carry your learning across devices.
