Open Dict

Privacy Policy

Effective date: September 23, 2026

Open Dict is a local dictionary and AI lookup app for iPhone, iPad and Mac. This policy explains what data the app uses, when it leaves your device, and the choices you have. “We” refers to the Open Dict developer, reachable at support@kmate.io.

1. Local dictionaries and learning data

Open Dict does not require a developer-operated account. Imported dictionary files are read and indexed on your device. The app stores dictionary references, indexes and caches, preferences, lookup history, saved words, vocabulary groups, ratings, highlights, notes and relevant definition content to provide lookup and review features.

We do not upload your dictionary files or learning data to our own servers. Local dictionary lookup works offline. Files you keep in iCloud Drive or another file service remain subject to that service’s storage and sync settings.

2. Optional AI services and API keys

When you use an AI dictionary or test a prompt, the app sends the lookup word or phrase, the rendered prompt, language settings and selected model to the AI provider or custom API endpoint you configure. If automatic lookup is enabled for an AI dictionary, lookups can trigger these requests automatically. Fetching a provider’s model list also contacts that provider.

Requests go directly from your device to the configured service, with your API key for authentication; they are not routed through our servers. The service receives normal connection information, such as your IP address. The app does not automatically attach your complete dictionary library, history or notes to these requests. Any personal information you include in a lookup or prompt is sent as part of that request.

API keys are stored in encrypted form with your AI configuration and may sync through your private iCloud when sync is enabled. They must be available to the app to authenticate requests. Use only endpoints you trust. You can disable automatic AI lookup, remove an AI configuration or clear its key in the app, and revoke the key with its provider.

The selected provider’s own privacy policy and terms govern its handling, retention, processing location and any use of submitted content for model training. This also applies to custom endpoints. We do not control those practices; review them before enabling the service. Local lookup does not require AI.

3. Optional iCloud sync

When iCloud sync is enabled and available, Open Dict uses Apple CloudKit’s private database for your Apple Account to sync lookup history, saved words, vocabulary groups, ratings, highlights, notes, related saved content, and AI configurations, including prompts and encrypted API credentials, across your devices. We do not receive a copy of that private database on our own servers.

Local dictionary files, their indexes and device-specific file references are not distributed by this CloudKit sync. You can change the sync setting in the app; the change takes effect after restarting the app. Turning sync off retains existing data and does not itself delete cloud copies. Apple’s privacy policy and iCloud terms also apply.

4. Purchases

The optional, one-time dictionary-limit unlock is processed by Apple through the App Store and StoreKit. The app checks purchase entitlements and supports restoring purchases for the same Apple Account. We do not receive your payment-card details. Apple handles payment and transaction records under its own policies.

5. Analytics, external links and support

The app does not include advertising, cross-app tracking, or third-party analytics or crash-reporting SDKs. We do not sell or rent your personal data. Any diagnostic sharing you enable with Apple is governed by Apple’s settings and policies.

If you open an external link, its destination’s privacy policy applies. This privacy page does not load the website’s analytics script. The hosting service may process ordinary web access information, such as IP address, browser information and requested URL, to deliver and secure the page. A website theme preference may be stored locally in your browser.

If you email support, we receive your email address and the message and attachments you choose to send. We use them to respond and resolve your request, retain them only as needed for that purpose or applicable obligations, and do not automatically receive your app database or API keys. Please do not include API keys in support messages.

6. Retention, deletion and your choices

You can remove dictionaries, clear their caches, and delete history, saved words, groups, highlights, notes or AI configurations using the available app controls. These are separate data categories: removing a dictionary or its cache does not necessarily remove learning records or source files stored elsewhere. You control the deletion of separately stored source files and exports.

When sync is active, supported record deletions propagate through iCloud when devices reconnect and sync completes. Disabling sync or uninstalling the app does not by itself erase all iCloud data, backups, or copies on other devices. Use Apple’s iCloud storage and backup controls where available to manage those copies. Data already sent to an AI provider must be managed with that provider.

For questions or applicable privacy requests about support information held by us, contact support@kmate.io. We cannot directly inspect or erase your on-device data, private iCloud database or an AI provider’s records.

7. Security

Open Dict uses Apple’s app storage and CloudKit mechanisms, stores API credentials in encrypted form, and uses HTTPS for built-in AI service endpoints. A custom endpoint’s security depends on its configuration; use HTTPS and protect your device, Apple Account and API keys. No storage or transmission method can guarantee absolute security.

8. Children’s privacy

We do not knowingly collect children’s personal information through a developer-operated account or tracking service. Parents and guardians should supervise optional AI services, purchases and support submissions and check the relevant provider’s age requirements. Contact us if a child has sent personal information to support so we can address its deletion as applicable.

9. Policy updates and contact

We may update this policy when the app’s data practices change. The effective date above identifies the current version. Material changes will be communicated through the app or website as appropriate.

For privacy questions or requests, contact the Open Dict developer at support@kmate.io.
