What is KMate, and how is it different from other tools?

+

KMate is the all-new, cross-platform successor to our classic Kindle Mate, trusted by readers worldwide for over a decade. It unifies your highlights, notes, and vocabulary from all Kindle devices, the Kindle app, and Amazon Cloud. Unlike other tools, KMate is fundamentally different in three ways: 1) Positioning: it focuses on your Kindle reading and learning assets, forming a complete loop from import and organization to review and mastery, ideal for lifelong learners, deep-reading note takers, and language learners. 2) Functionality: instead of handling only one data type, KMate is the only tool that centrally imports, organizes, exports, and supports learning review for highlights, notes, and vocabulary together; the new immersive reading mode also supports custom color tags and status tracking such as Learning, Mastered, Read, and Unread. 3) Privacy: full-featured local-first operation means no mandatory upload to third-party services, and your data stays safely stored on your own device.

What is the difference between the Mac and Windows versions of KMate?

+

In terms of release cadence: before the 3.5.x series, KMate for Mac was updated faster than the Windows version, while Windows followed a branch-based release model. Starting from version 3.5.33, the Mac and Windows editions moved to synchronized dual-platform releases, so the latest features and fixes now apply to both platforms at the same time. However, because Mac App Store and Microsoft Store reviews follow different processes, listing availability may still differ slightly. In terms of functionality: the core feature set is fully aligned across both platforms, including highlight and note management, dictionary management, and Reading Mode. Because macOS sandbox permissions are stricter than Windows, the Mac version requires a one-time authorization when you first connect a classic Kindle or add dictionary files. The Windows version also supports automatic Kindle model and connection status detection.

Why can't KMate connect to my Kindle?

+

For classic models (Touch/Voyage/Oasis/Paperwhite pre-2022), use a USB cable that supports data transfer (not charge-only). For newer models (2022+ Paperwhite/Colorsoft/Scribe), they use MTP protocol — ensure no other MTP apps (like Android File Transfer) are running. On Mac, you may need to grant disk access permission when first connecting.

Can I sync without a Kindle device?

+

Yes! KMate supports syncing from Amazon Kindle Cloud (for purchased books) via the File menu. You can also import notes exported as HTML from the Kindle App on your phone.

What dictionary formats are supported?

+

KMate supports StarDict (.tar.gz), Mdict (.mdx), Mobi (.mobi), and plain text dictionaries. It also integrates Google Translate, Bing Translate, Gemini AI, and DeepSeek AI for online definitions.

What is the difference between Free and Pro on Windows and Mac?

+

Because the platform and release model differ, KMate uses different Free/Pro strategies on Mac and Windows. Mac App Store: the free version is fully functional, with a display limit of your 1,000 most recent imported items. There are no feature limits or time limits, so you can keep using it for life. Database Mode, Reading Mode, reading analytics, import/export, and other core features are all included in Free. You can unlock unlimited capacity with either a one-time purchase or a subscription. Microsoft Store (Windows): the download is the Pro edition with all features and unlimited capacity, and it includes a 15-day free trial. There is no in-app purchase or subscription. During or after the trial, you can decide whether to make a one-time purchase for the lifetime version. Unlike Mac, Windows does not have a long-term free tier with a 1,000-item limit, but the Windows version is priced significantly lower, at about 50% off the Mac price.

What are the system requirements?

+

KMate supports macOS 10.13 or later, and Windows 10/11. It is fully optimized for both Intel and Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3/M4) Macs.

Which Kindle devices are supported?

+

KMate supports ALL Kindle models including the latest Kindle Paperwhite, Kindle Colorsoft, and Kindle Scribe series, as well as all classic models like Kindle Touch, Voyage, and Oasis.

Does KMate upload my data?

+

No. KMate prioritizes your privacy. All data is stored locally on your device. The only network features are optional cloud sync (which only reads your Kindle notes from Amazon) and online dictionary lookups.
